Top 5: Beers
How many of us really take the time to consider the alternatives to the humdrum beers the high street chains try to force down our throats? It’s time to become a beer connoisseur. And with that in mind, Gentry brings you its’ top five brews…
Who wouldn't want to spend a hot summer evening sipping on a cold imported classic or a homegrown master? Here's how to improve your taste in five easy sips:
Hoegaarden, 4.9% vol
What better place to start than with an original ‘witbier’, Hoegaarden? Don’t be fooled by its cloudy appearance, the Hoegaarden is sweet tasting, and smooth. Its subtle flavours consist of a toned down spice and pepper taste that is perfectly accompanied by a slightly malty sweetness. It’s a lovely light beer sure to satisfy a worked-up thirst but not someone looking for a rugged brew.
Brew Dog Paradox Isle of Arran, 10% vol
If you are in need of a thick, full flavour then look no further than piece of Scottish brewing mastery. This stout is something of an acquired taste but once you have it you’ll be glad you made the effort. It’s mature, coffee and chocolate fullness of flavour is matured in whiskey casks used in the Isle of Arran’s distilleries. A wonderful beer for those looking to tackle a true imperial stout.
Innis & Gunn Blonde Lightly Oaked Beer, 6% vol
A nice light ale for the summer, the Innis & Gunn lightly oaked carries prominent vanilla and citrus flavours that refresh and stimulate the palate perfectly. This Scottish brewing name is synonymous with great quality beers and some may say this has a tough task living up to its sister products. For us, it’s a nicely carbonated treat you’ll relish, so well worth a try.
Ruddles Rhubarb Ale, 4.7% vol
Rhubarb, you either love rhubarb or hate it. This beer, however, suits everyone. You might think that this deliciously desert-sounding ale is one for cold winters nights but that is not the case. It’s a good hoppy ale coupled with a satisfying sweetness rhubarb and vanilla. We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised after giving this one a go.
Pilsner Urquell 4.4% vol
A classic and probably the best pilsner ever made. Soaked in brewing heritage, this Bohemian beverage changed the way the world drank. Its malted, hoppy undertones dominated by a beautiful rush of herbal spiciness is near enough the same flavour that was poured from the first casks in 1842. To find perfection in a pils you must head back to where it all began. Pilsner Urquell comes highly recommended.
These are, of course, just a few of the fine beers the world of brewing has to offer. Let us know your favourites.
