With so many delicious screen sirens to choose from, it's been an arduous selection process. So, who made the final cut?

Cinema history is one told not in words, but in images and it has not been sold on anything less essential than raw desire. More accurately, film itself has been propelled along its course by offering impossible, intangible glimpses of achingly-near female forms. But who, among them all can be considered the most alluring ever to have graces the flickering darkness of the silver screen?   

5. SCARLETT JOHANSSON

I'm fairly confident that Miss. Johansson could approach any man on the planet – young, old, straight, gay, happy, demented – and with a certain look from a particular angle, ruin whatever relationship he might be in, forever. Because sooner or later, it's every fella's destiny to catch Scarlett fever. She is a nubile temptress, a siren for the ages, uselessly, vacantly sexy in every hot footed step she takes.

4. RAQUEL WELCH

It's hard not to be crass when describing Raquel Welch's appeal. It's perhaps enough to say that there are two very good reasons why she makes the list. She will forever be associated with her sensational turn in the X-Rated Myra Breckinridge, which became one of the iconic failures of the 70s. A Russ Meyer heroine escaped, Miss. Welch came into her own in the Hammer remake of One Million Years B.C, turning the fur bikini into the history's hottest two-piece.

Cruz slinks along with an irresistably mussed post-coital purr. She has achieved that all too rare thing of critical and commerical success across a range of genres and national cinemas. Her effortlessly sexy appeal has been turned into an aesthetic in itself by a slavering Almoldovar and it's easy to see why: she's simply the most beautiful woman working in film today.

Watching Rita Hayworth in Lady From Shanghai, viewers will be forgiven for thinking the film was shot not in black and white but in a searing, fiery glow. With her famous locks licked into a short blonde crop, Miss Hayworth transforms into the most devilish of femme fatales.

Sofia Villani Scicolone is the ultimate sex symbol. Without doubt, one of the most naturally beautiful faces ever to have graced the scene, Sophia Loren epitomised the vivacious cultural reinvention of Italy that seared the cinematic, music and fashion scene throughout the 1950's and early 1960s. Her awesome physical form in films such as Houseboat and The Fall of the Roman Empire are horrendously sexy and impossible to forget.
