Final Quarter Films

As the year draws to a close there is always an eclectic mix of cinematic releases; the festive-themed family movies, the worthy Oscar-hopefuls, the disposable horror flicks and the usual array of comedies and thrillers.

Gentry Style has sifted through the release schedules and picked the big four films every fellow should look out for over the next couple of months:

Fantastic Mr Fox poster
Fantastic Mr Fox (October 23rd)

Anyone whose childhood didn’t include the classic Roald Dahl book about the eponymous fox has surely been the victim of some kind of cultural neglect; make sure you don’t miss out on the movie.

The animated tale revolves around a mischievous, daring and very fantastic fox (George Clooney), his loving wife (Meryl Streep) and son (Jason Schwartzmann) and an assortment of woodland friends (voiced by the likes of Owen Wilson and Bill Murray). Any fans of director Wes Anderson will be immediately familiar with the meticulously crafted, occasionally whimsical feel of the film. The real accomplishment is that he has seamlessly translated these elements from his live-action movies into an animated children’s film.

Nine (November 25th)

Daniel Day-Lewis in Nine

Next up is an ambitious musical with an all star cast; Nine, based upon Fellini’s hugely influential 8½, is a vibrant and provocative song and dance number that follows the life of world famous film director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) as he reaches a creative and personal crisis of epic proportion, while balancing the numerous women in his life. These include his wife (Marion Cotillard), his mistress (Penelope Cruz), his film star muse (Nicole Kidman), his confidant and costume designer (Judi Dench),an American fashion journalist (Kate Hudson), the whore from his youth (Fergie from Black Eyed Peas) and his mother (Sophia Loren).  Phew.

Directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago) and adapted from the 1982 Broadway production which won five Tony Awards including Best Musical, this project certainly has a lot of experience and talent behind it. The question is whether or not it will prove to be equal to the sum of its parts or just another so-so musical (See Moulin Rouge).

James Cameron's Avatar
Avatar (December 18th)

James Cameron’s long-awaited high technology blockbuster looks to me like Pocahontas with blue aliens. But this may not necessarily be a bad thing. However engrossing the plot turns out to be, this movie (Cameron’s first since Titanic) should be without equal in terms of technological ambition and cinematic reach. With specially developed motion capture animation technology and a digital 3-D camera system, this is sure to be some spectacle when it hits IMAX screens in December.

.

Sherlock Holmes (December 26th)

Sherlock HolmesGuy Ritchie’s output has stalled slightly since the bombast of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, with the likes of Revolver and Rock ‘n’ Rolla getting mixed reviews. Sherlock Holmes looks to be a return to form though potently blending action, swagger and savvy dialogue with liberal doses of humour.

An accomplished cast includes Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes, Jude Law as Watson and Rachel McAdams as the eye candy, while one suspects Mark Strong will steal the majority of scenes he’s in, as per usual. Could turn out to be a real treat this festive season.
